Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution has become a pressing global issue and has been rapidly increasing each year. Its increase in production has been overwhelming that the world does not know how to deal with it. We have become so addicted to disposable plastic; we have set aside the severe environmental consequences and it has now become ubiquitous. It is everywhere. It is found in our soil, in our sea and... in our stomach.

How can we help?

There are many small ways and changes with big impact that we, as consumers, can do to help protect our planet from plastic pollution.

  • Be a conscientious consumer - force yourself to gradually stop using disposable plastic and develop a habit of using reusable products, like bringing your own bags when going to the store, bringing your own cutleries and using a travel mug or bottle.
  • Use plastic alternatives - Fortunately nowadays we already have developed an array of replacement for plastic, such as bamboo, hemp and seaweed to name a few. There are plenty of materials that can do what plastic does without the negative impact to the environment.
  • Ditch the cling wrap - Unlike cling film that cannot be recycled, foil is recyclable. So, if you are using foil, make sure you put it in the recycling bin after use! Another alternative is the Beeswax Wrap.
  • Practice repurposing / upcycling - Repurposing is the use of something for a purpose other than its original intended use. Repurposing an item can be done by modifying it to fit a new use, or by using the item as is in a new way.

  • Cook more - Make your own meals and opt out from ordering takeaways, not only that this reduces your consumption of plastic it is also healthier. Purchase second-hand items and repurposed old ones.
  • Put pressure on manufacturers and retailers - big corporations have a much bigger carbon footprint than consumers and support those competitors that opts for sustainability.
  • Be political! - There are number of things that governments can do to help, from campaigning public awareness, adopting policies to reduce the use of disposable plastic, to imposing levies or by outright banning certain products. Urge elected officials to introduce and support legislations that would make plastic less desirable.

We believe the world is waking up. We believe that a lot of people are finally recognising that there is a need for change. This planet is the only one we’ve got, and it’s a beautiful planet if we continue to do our part and protect it. We should act now not only for the sake of humanity, but for the sake of all organisms who lives here. Because if our planet dies, all life on Earth will be extinct!
